Student’s work from our calligraphy class was featured in the Get Familiar with Calligraphy section of the Daily Newspaper.
Tomoki Yamamoto
We received the following review
“I can clearly picture you practicing so earnestly all the time. Your strokes are strong and well-centered, especially the hiragana characters are excellent. Since the kanji ‘強’ has many strokes on the right-hand side, try writing it with more width. Please keep up the good work.”
Tomoki is a second grader who writes with an open, upright posture.
With wide, curious eyes, he listens closely to comments on shapes and lines—and sometimes watches the tip of my pencil intently as I demonstrate.
I used to think that younger students were like little aliens,
but his calm, focused gaze tells me he’s one of those I can truly look forward to watching grow.
Haruto Okamoto
We received the following review
“You must have worked hard through the pandemic. This powerful piece carries the hope for happiness around the world. For the character ‘世’, begin with the vertical line in the center, then the one on the right, and lastly, connect the line underneath. If your name were written a little bolder, it would balance better with the rest of the piece. I have high hopes for you.”
Haruto is a lively and humorous fifth grader.
Yet when it comes to writing, his posture and concentration are truly admirable.
He’s full of curiosity and an eagerness to learn about calligraphy,
and I often find myself learning just as much from his energy as he does from me.
